The Mystery. The Gloom. The Glamour… Night Photography

Night.

Where everything blends into nothingness.

Where light shines through and rips the darkness with an everlasting glow, painting a beautiful picture.

Night photography.

It’s my new obsession. It’s something that speaks to me in a different sense. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I just can’t stop looking through photos that were taken at night.

Perhaps it’s because I’m a sucker for neo-noir films such as Blade Runner or John Wick, and how the lighting makes such an impact in a scene.

Lights… Yes!

Lots and lots of neon lights with lots and lots of colors making for a visible treat for the eyes.

What’s even more great about night photography, especially nowadays, is the fact that cameras are getting more and more advanced for these low light situations.

12,800 ISO??

I mean, who would have thought? Of course, picture quality will be lost and you’ll get grainy shots, but grab a lens that’s f1.5 with image stabilization, and boom!

Night photography is a different mindset. A different philosophy. A supermarket during the day is just a boring ol’ supermarket during the day, but once the sun goes down and those neon lights kick in… Watch out. Now it’s a different story.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t all too crazy about taking photos at night. I tried. My settings were off. I would get nasty, cringe-worthy shots that showed blur and camera shakes because the shots were being taken handheld, and one slight minuscule shake would throw the image off.

Then, my arsenal of lenses improved. I paid more attention to my settings and learned even more. I was slowly getting the hang of it (still learning more and more as we go).

Then neo-noir happened and I couldn’t resist the eye candy that was being delivered to me via films and photos.

I got pumped. I got excited. I waited until sunset, grabbed my camera, and went into the darkness to find me some neon treasure.
